WELCOME TO THE C3D WEBSITE

The C3D+ objectives

The C3D+ Initiative is a new step forward for C3D, directly involving 6 training centres covering around 30 developing countries who will benefit from a training programme on climate change related issues. The C3D+ team will continue reinforcing the network's ability to deliver targeted training and capacity development at the national and regional levels with the three following strategic objectives: * An improved participation of developing countries in the UNFCCC process; * A timely implementation of the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol by developing countries; * A better co-ordination & integration of national climate policies with sustainable development policies

In Focus

Special feature: TheCSAG Winter School 2010 (12 July - 23 July 2010, Cape Town, South Africa)

One of the largest limiting factors behind appropriate regional response to climate change is the misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about the core concepts, information, and use of climate change data. While globally there is a significant amount of published material and online forums, these are often not appropriate to a given activity, lack the important element of engagement with experts in the field, and sometimes do not provide effective access to core knowledge.

The Climate Systems Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town in partnership with the Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI), with support from the United Nations Institute for Training And Research (UNITAR), is offering a 2-week winter school to address this gap and provide training to practitioners engaged in decision making, vulnerability assessment, impacts, adaptation, and policy development in Africa. The winter school will be taught by leading climate scientists and adaptation experts and will aim to provide an overview of the latest, relevant climate science as well as sector specific case studies and experiences.

Latest publication: The ERC team has finalised another report under the UNITAR C3D+ project, titled "The University of Cape Town Carbon Footprint". To access the report, click here.

The latest updates of C3D+ come from SEI, IISD and SPREP which held 2 training workshops on climate change adaptation in Tuvalu and Niue at the end of March. The aim of the workshops is to explore how to integrate climate change adaptation into strategic planning and decision-making to support the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) programme for 2010. Participants received hands-on training on a range of tools, look at different methods for how to conduct vulnerability assessments at the local level and explore future climate change scenarios. The workshops will also provide a forum for participants to share knowledge, experiences, and difficulties/constraints in working on climate change adaptation under the PACC programme.

The Energy Research Center (University of Cape Town) has been sharing the outcome of Copenhagen with a seminar by Harald Winkler on "What happened in Copenhagen and where to next?", as well as a report on the "ERC at COP15 in Copenhagen".
